Canada Day

Sunday was Canada Day and was a (delightful?) 35ºC! We headed over to Scarborough on the subway (cough, tube) after figuring out how to use the TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) for the annual Canada Day parade.

There were over 50 floats taking part in the parade, from a number of different organisations, clubs and nationalities and it really was a great example of how multicultural the city of Toronto is. There were marching bands, vintage cars, steel drummers and martial arts to name a few! We didn’t envy those taking part in the parade – we were roasting in the shade!

We were repeatedly told that Ashbridge’s Bay was the place to be for Canada Day fireworks and we were not disappointed! The atmosphere was great, and the display just kept getting more and more extravagant as the show went on. They even had fireworks that exploded in the shape of hearts! Getting home was an adventure in itself, being on the opposite side of town over 2 hours walk away. We decided to try and skip the crowds by walking a few subway stations ahead but realised that walking a few stops in Toronto is not the same as walking a few stops in London – everything is so much more spread out! After an hour of walking through some slightly unsettling neighbourhoods and being relieved that the trains didn’t stop running after 11:30pm, we made it home after a long but awesome day of celebrations.
